India is a country of great cultural vibrancy which is superbly reflected in the Indian fashion industry. The wide variety of ethnic Indian clothing has allowed the fashion scene in the country to be a unique blend of diversity which combines age-old traditions with contemporary design and aesthetics.
The big names of the Indian fashion industry are renowned in the global arena for their uniqueness and innovation. There is no dearth of talented designers in the country. Following are the top ten heavyweights of the Indian fashion industry:
Born in London and raised in Mumbai, Manish Malhotra is one of the biggest stalwarts of Indian fashion and style. He embarked on his career at the age of 25 and has since designed for countless films and all the leading celebrities of the Indian film industry. He revolutionized fashion in Bollywood by envisioning a look for the character in a movie. Malhotra has also designed numerous wedding trousseaus for eminent Indian families. He is known best for his luxurious and elegant style which fuses traditional embroidery with modern flair.
Ritu Kumar launched her brand in 1969 and since then it has become one of the biggest labels in India with stores dotted all over the country. Kumar’s style is a rich confluence of time-honoured traditions of Indian craftsmanship and modern day sophistication. Her effort to revive traditional Indian handiwork has enabled her to generate employment in many rural and underdeveloped regions. She has clothed all the leading actresses of Bollywood and key members of the Indian glitterati, as well as the finalists of the Miss World and Miss Universe pageants.
Having received a degree from The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, Tarun Tahiliani created a revolution in the Indian fashion scene by establishing the very first fashion boutique in India known as Ensemble in 1987. He also set up Tarun Tahiliani Design Studio in New Delhi and started his own label known as Ahilian. A pioneer of fashion, Tahiliani was also the first Indian designer to showcase his creations at Milan Fashion Week. His signature style is a blend of Indian artistry and Italian pattern cutting with a modern edge rendered by digital textile printing. This gives his designs an opulent look which is also chic and sophisticated.
Sabyasachi Mukherji is one of the leading designers of the Indian fashion industry. Now based in Kolkata, he made waves in the fashion world at a very early age, having won the Femina British Council Award for Most Outstanding Young Designer in India in 2001, merely two years after he graduated from the National Institute of Fashion Technology in New Delhi. He was also the Grand Winner at the Mercedes Benz Asia Fashion Week in 2003. Mukherji describes the creations of his eponymous label asinternational styling with an Indian soulwhich is a fusion of styles with vibrant embellishments and a diverse colour palette. His creativity and genius can be seen in the many Bollywood movies that he has designed costumes for.
In 1996, Time Magazine declared Rohit Bal to be India’s Master of fantasy and fabric’. Having graduated from St. Stephen’s College in New Delhi, Bal created his first fashion line in 1990 which was a collection of traditional design wear for men. Since then, he has carved a niche for himself and has fashion shows in India, Paris, Singapore and New York. His style is lavish and decadent, with meticulously crafted details and embellishments. His client list not only includes the biggest celebrities and socialites of India but also Hollywood stars such as Cindy Crawford, Uma Thurman, Pamela Anderson, etc.
JJ Valaya is one of India’s premier and most created fashion designers today. Valaya was the first couture label to have a solo show in the country back in 1994 and went on to open JJ Valaya Life, the largest single designer store till date. His groundbreaking styles and designs are fusion of modern day haute couture and traditional crafts which are chic and alluring, inspired by the royal era fashion of Rajasthan. Valaya has held shows in India, London, Paris, Dubai, Hong Kong, Singapore, etc with the top international designers of the fashion world. The first Indian designer to present her creations at Paris, Ritu Beri is one of the biggest internationally acclaimed names of the Indian fashion industry. She graduated from Delhi University in 1987 and got herself enrolled at the National Institute of Fashion Technology thereafter. Her illustrious career in fashion began in 1990 when she created her first line of clothing called Lavanya. It was a raging success both in India as well as in the international market. Beri’s style and elegance have no comparison and her works are highly sought after in India, Paris, London, the US, etc.
8.Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla
The duo of Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, or ‘the boys’ as they are known in the fashion circuit, is a creative alliance that has broken ground in the fashion industry of India. They were one of the very first designers to have their works displayed at Harrods thereby making it big in the international fashion scene at a very early stage. Even though they lack in professional training, they more than make up for it with their powerhouse talent and hunger for perfection which enables them to push the limits of ethnic fashion with each new creation.
Manish Arora launched his eponymous label in 1997 and started retailing in India. Ever since then, he has climbed up the ladder of success and become of the most favoured designers of the global fashion world. His label made its international debut at the London Fashion Week in 2005 and had its showcase at the Paris Fashion Week two years later to absolutely rave reviews. Arora is known for his bright and diverse colour palette and unique style of craftsmanship. He has an exceptional ability to make a fusion of Indian heritage and contemporary aesthetics which has enabled him to attract international clientele with his colourful creations. He has also done collaborations with MAC for a range of vibrant beauty products.
Wendell Rodricks is a multi-talented fashion designer who was born in Mumbai. He studied fashion in the US and in France and since then acquired international fame through his exquisite skills and minimalist chic style. He is known for his unbridled passion for white and beautiful creations inspired by Indian and Goan culture that he actively seeks to promote and preserve. Rodricks played a key role in organizing the first ever Lakme India Fashion Week that was held in 2000. He is also an avid fashion journalist and has written highly acclaimed features and columns for Apparel, Femina, Goa Today and other media outlets. Besides all of that, Rockricks is also engaged in theatre design, forecast portfolio and advertisement styling.
